I work to make security a force multiplier for patient safety, not an obstacle to delivering care. My research at the Tufts Security & Privacy Lab focuses on building security for medical devices and hospital networks that clinicians can actually use, and I’m joining Philips in 2026 to put that work into practice on patient monitoring systems. Security measures only protect people if the people can live with them.

One of the most unusual cybersecurity vulnerabilities ever documented confirms that a song can literally be a weapon. The music video for Janet Jackson's 1989 hit "Rhythm Nation" contains a specific resonant frequency that can physically crash certain 5400 RPM laptop hard drives common in the mid-2000s. The acoustic attack was so effective that manufacturers eventually had to add a custom filter to their audio pipeline to remove the offending frequencies and protect the hardware. Learn more.
